The
Land
Previously, the property was a well-loved, four-generation
dairy farm. Of particular value is the exceptional nature
of the soils, as well as its rolling, diverse topography
and its frontage on Little River, which joins Penobscot Bay
a few miles away.
It also has an exceptional location (at the intersection of
Tufts and Edgecomb Roads) within two miles of downtown
Belfast, the harbor, two elementary schools, the middle
school, the high school, and the University of Maine
Hutchinson Center. The airport and shopping centers are
within a mile, as are major highways, Routes 1 and 3.

The
Belfast Community
Belfast is a city of 7,000 people located in Maine's
midcoast area, between Camden and Bucksport. The city
features an active waterfront, lively arts community, and
is the center of business, services, and county government.
Belfast is located at the juncture of coastal Route 1 and
Route 3 which connects directly to Augusta, Maine's capital
and the intersect of the Maine Turnpike. Belfast is served
by bus to Bangor and Portland, has its own small airport,
and an excellent harbor.
Belfast is located in Waldo County, which is home to many
farms, small resource-based businesses like Duck River Fish
Farm, and larger businesses such as Bank of America. Maine
Organic Farmers & Gardeners Association (MOFGA) and
Unity College are located in Waldo County.
Traditional housing in the Belfast area falls into 2 main
categories: in-town residential neighborhoods and rural,
large-lot homesteads.
Belfast Cohousing & Ecovillage is working to create a
community that combines the best elements of both types:
located in a rural area with clustered housing and shared
infrastructure, the community would preserve open land for
its beauty, recreation, and farming, and foster a
close-knit, cooperative, and ecologically conscious way of
life.
